Coils Thinning Into Dust begins with a single idea, one line wound from pole to pole, built to describe a sphere without ever closing into one. The axis leans to the right, just enough that the turns never repeat in quite the same way twice.
On the side that faces the light, the spiral holds its full form. The coils sit close, each one legible against the one beneath it, each gap wide enough to let the far side of the sphere show through, so that near and far are always read together, never one without the other.
Follow the turn further and the line begins to give way. What was a continuous coil becomes a field of individual marks, looser with every rotation, until the last turns barely survive as a scatter of points suspended in the dark. The sphere does not end. It thins.
This is the quiet subject of the piece, how much form can be implied by what remains once most of it has been allowed to disappear. The coil becomes dust not through damage but through release, the same way a held note fades rather than stops.
Seen from across a room, the work reads as a single turning volume, contained and sure of itself. Closer, that certainty dissolves into the marks that built it, a field of depth where structure and absence share the same surface.
Coils Thinning Into Dust continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
"What spirals outward eventually learns to let go."
