Closer Than Breath

Closer Than Breath is a contemporary artwork about intimacy, surrender and the moment two lives merge into a single form.

Two figures hold each other so close that the boundary between them disappears. Their bodies flow together into one sculptural shape, drawn out of deep shadow by a single soft light. Nothing distracts. Nothing competes. There is only the embrace.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges through controlled scratches on acrylic glass, each mark catching and releasing light as the viewer moves. From a distance the forms read as one quiet, monumental silhouette. Step closer and the surface opens: a field of controlled surface damage from which the figures slowly rise.

That tension carries meaning here. Closeness, real closeness, is never seamless. It is made of small pressures, small adjustments, the quiet friction of two people choosing to stay. The scratches do not illustrate that idea. They enact it.

The strong chiaroscuro and the large calm shadow masses leave no room for distraction. There is the light. There is the dark. There is the shape of two people becoming one. The composition does not explain the emotion. It is the emotion.

Closer Than Breath continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
