Climbing Toward a Single Glow

Climbing Toward a Single Glow begins in darkness. A stairwell rises through landing after landing, each one swallowed by shadow, until the third floor holds the only light in the entire climb. A single figure moves toward it, one step at a time, unable to see what waits beyond the glow, trusting only that it is there.

The image is not painted or printed onto the acrylic glass. It is scratched into it, drawn out through controlled surface damage rather than added on top. No paint. No print. No ink. What you see is what has been taken away, until the stairwell, the shadow and the climbing figure emerged from the surface itself.

The work is always visible, in daylight or in a dim room alike. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. Under a direct source the scratches catch and hold the light, the contrast deepens, the stairwell falls further into black and the lit landing burns brighter. It reads differently from every angle, without ever losing the image underneath.

From across the room the piece reads as one dramatic scene, a single glow suspended in a field of black. Step closer and that certainty dissolves into a field of controlled scratches, each one part of a larger structure and none of them meaningful alone.

The subject carries its own weight. A stairwell with its landings left dark is a familiar shape for ambition, for faith, for grief, for any pursuit where only one point ahead is illuminated and everything before and after stays unknown. The figure climbs anyway. It is an image about moving toward the only light you can see, without needing to see the landings beyond it.
