Chanel Traced in Smoke takes one of the most photographed faces of the twentieth century and lets most of her disappear. What remains is a field of individual marks that gathers into a brow, an eye, the set of a mouth that gave nothing away. The rest of the frame returns to black, not as a background but as a decision.

The hat survives almost whole, its band of pearls a bright arc above a face built from depth rather than shading. The cigarette holds its line in smoke thin marks, a gesture caught mid air and barely kept. The scissors hang by a few scattered points, present only as a suggestion, the way a tool of her trade might linger at the edge of memory rather than the center of attention. The coat, the shoulders, most of the hand fall away entirely into the surrounding dark.

That imbalance is the work. A face assembled from a field of depth, a gesture reduced to a thread of light, and a void that refuses to explain itself. From across a room the piece reads as little more than a glint in black acrylic glass, a suggestion of a woman rather than a record of one. Step closer and the depth resolves into likeness, into the particular tilt of a head that built an empire on restraint.

Chanel built a language out of what she removed, the ornament she refused, the color she withheld, the silhouette she pared down until only the essential line remained. This piece answers her in kind. No paint. No print. No ink. Just light finding the depth that was left for it, the same economy of means that made her name synonymous with less being more.

This work continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Even her smoke knew when to stop."
