Burnout

Burnout begins with a single flame in absolute darkness. A tall candle stands alone, its light the only proof that anything exists at all. Around it, nothing. Above it, only the slow, quiet work of disappearing.

As the wax descends, it takes on something almost human, a face forming and dissolving in the same breath. It is unclear whether the figure is being born or being lost. That uncertainty is the point. Time does not announce itself. It simply continues, and something of us goes with it.

The image is not painted or printed onto the surface. It is revealed through controlled scratches across acrylic glass, a field of marks that only becomes a picture when light finds it. Nothing was added to create this face. Everything was taken away.

From a distance, Burnout reads as a single quiet gesture, a candle burning in the dark. Step closer and that certainty dissolves into countless individual scratches, a surface that refuses to settle into one fixed image. As the light shifts, the face moves between clarity and absence, present one moment, gone the next, the way a flame itself never holds the same shape twice.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

Burnout is not about an ending. It is about the shape something leaves behind as it goes. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
