Half of this face is still claimed by the dark. The other half has already stepped forward, caught in a single fall of light that carves the cheekbone, the brow, the fixed and steady eye. This is David Bowie at the height of his late seventies reinvention, not performing, simply present, and the image asks the same question his career always asked. Who is emerging, and who is still becoming.
No paint. No print. No ink. The likeness is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than pigment, so the portrait exists as removal rather than addition. Seen from across a room it reads as a single monumental face pressing out of black. Move closer and that face resolves into a dense field of controlled scratches, each one a small absence that adds up to a presence.
The image is always there, in every light. But light is not passive here. Under a direct source the scratches catch and throw their own faint shine, the shadow half of the face deepens, and the lit half sharpens into something almost architectural. Light does not create this image. It sharpens it.
Bowie built a career out of thresholds, out of the moment one identity gives way to the next while the eyes stay unmistakably his own. This piece holds that exact instant. A face half surrendered to darkness, half already arrived, and a surface that never lets you settle on which state is permanent.
Bowie Emerges From Shadow continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.
