Bowed Before the Water

A classical figure kneels at the edge of stillness, spine curved low, one hand reaching down until it meets the surface it cannot pass through. Above the line, the body is a field of fine scratches catching the light. Below it, the same form returns, fainter, broken, drawn downward into the dark.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, formed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, so that the figure exists only where the material has been taken away.

The image is always present. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and hold, the contrast deepens, and the kneeling body seems to lift slightly out of the black. From another angle it settles again into quiet, without ever losing its shape.

From across a room the work reads as one gesture, a single bowed silhouette suspended in darkness. Standing close, that gesture dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one part of a surface that had to be broken to hold this pose at all.

The pose recalls an old story that never really leaves us, a figure bent toward its own reflection, uncertain whether it is looking at itself or at something already slipping away. Bowed Before the Water is less about vanity than about reverence, the moment before recognition becomes loss.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
