She arrives not as stone but as a field of individual marks suspended in black, Athena with her crested helmet turned in three quarter profile, her calm features held together by nothing but depth and the absence around them.

The crest rises dense and bright, each plume given its full weight, and the brow and the line of her nose carry the clearest light in the piece. Her shoulders and the fall of her drapery are allowed to thin, the marks growing sparser until they are swallowed by the surrounding dark, so that armor and myth alike seem to step out of, or dissolve back into, the night around her.

There is no background, no plinth, no setting beyond the void itself. From across a room the goddess reads as a single pale presence, a constellation briefly gathered into a face. Closer, that presence breaks into its true nature, a field of fine scratches and points, each one small, together holding the weight of a profile that has outlasted the civilization that first carved it.

Athena was wisdom armed, the mind that chose the shield over the spear when reason allowed it. Here she is given a second kind of armor, not bronze but light, a helmet and a gaze that hold their form only as long as the viewer stays to look. Turn away, and she scatters, as if returning to the stars she was always said to descend from.

Athena Scattered Into Starlight continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print.

A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"What remains of a goddess is what the dark chooses to release."
