Asking the Dark

Asking the Dark is a contemporary artwork about longing, absence and the reach that finds no answer.

A single hand rises from shadow, moving toward empty space. No face. No body. No destination. Only the gesture itself, lit at the fingertips, suspended in a darkness that gives nothing back.

The image appears through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. No paint. No print. No ink. As light falls across the surface and as the viewer moves, the hand shifts between clarity and quiet shadow. The darkness around it is not passive. It participates.

Seen up close, the work reveals a field of controlled scratches, the texture of a surface transformed. From a distance, that same surface becomes a composition of extraordinary stillness. A hand. A gesture. An unanswered question.

The reaching hand is one of the oldest gestures in human expression. Here it reaches toward nothing visible, and that is precisely the point. Absence is not the absence of meaning. In this work, it is the meaning.

Asking the Dark continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
