Almost Witnessed

Almost Witnessed is a contemporary artwork about presence, recognition and the threshold between being seen and disappearing.

The face does not arrive fully. It rises from absolute darkness, one eye sharp and alive, the rest dissolving back into the surface. The image was not built up. It was uncovered. Through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, light finds the contours of a human face, catching them for a moment before they recede again.

No paint. No print. No ink. What you see is the result of what was removed.

From a distance, the portrait carries the weight of a classical figure study. Monumental, still, undeniable. Step closer, and the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, each one redirecting light, each one part of what constructs a face from darkness. The same work, two entirely different experiences.

The title speaks to something felt in the image. You almost see the whole person. Almost. One eye meets you with full clarity. The other is swallowed by shadow. Light shifts across the acrylic glass, and the face moves with it. What felt certain becomes uncertain. What felt absent suddenly arrives.

There is something in this that goes beyond the visual. To be almost witnessed is a deeply human condition. Seen partially. Known incompletely. Present, but not fully acknowledged. The portrait holds that weight without explanation, without resolution.

Almost Witnessed continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
