A Thousand Rooms of Silence

A Thousand Rooms of Silence begins with a skyline. Out of the darkness of a modern Italian city at night, a monumental human profile takes shape, built entirely from the glow of a thousand windows and the quiet geometry of rooftops and streets. The face is the city, and the city is the face.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image exists because the acrylic glass has been altered, marked by controlled scratches that catch and release the light. The profile is not added to the surface, it is drawn out of it, the way a face might emerge from a crowd only when you know where to look.

Move past the work and the light shifts with you. At one angle the profile is unmistakable, monumental, almost architectural in its calm. At another, it dissolves back into darkness, and only the windows remain, scattered points of light with no face to hold them together. The work lives in that movement, between clarity and absence.

Stand close and the city becomes something else entirely, a field of scratches, each one a mark, a window, a life. Look again and inside a few of those windows, small solitary figures appear, barely visible, easy to miss. They are the quiet counterweight to the profile's scale, a reminder that every monument to collective ambition is made of individual, private rooms.

A face built from a city. A city built from windows. Windows that hold, one by one, the people who are never quite seen from far away.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
