A Spiral Thinned to Dust holds the shape of a galaxy seen from above, its arms curling slowly outward from a dense and luminous center. Nothing here was painted or printed onto the surface. The image is built from depth, a field of individual marks drawn tightly together at the core and scattered thin toward the edges, where the spiral dissolves into the surrounding dark.

Seen from across a room, the work reads as a single quiet form, pale and still against black, almost weightless. Step closer and that stillness breaks apart into a field of fine scratches, each one catching light at its own angle. Tilt the surface, change the light, move your own position, and the galaxy brightens, fades, or turns to shadow, never fixed, always a little different than the last time you looked.

A galaxy is already a kind of memory. Its light left the core long before it reached any eye that could see it, and its outer arms are mostly empty space holding a scatter of matter together by little more than gravity and time. The work borrows that honesty. Most of its surface is void. What remains, the small bright marks that still catch the light, is enough to suggest an entire spinning system, drifting slowly into dust.

A Spiral Thinned to Dust continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Even a galaxy is mostly absence, holding its light at a distance."
