A sphere turns slowly out of the dark, though only part of it consents to be seen. One continuous line has wound itself from pole to pole, tight where it begins, loosening as it reaches the equator, tightening again as it withdraws toward the other end, a single breath held in coils.

In the finished work, that whole geometry is never given back to us. A field of individual marks gathers along one side, dense enough near the crown to read as skin, as surface, as something you could almost touch. The other side lets go entirely. There the sphere simply is not, swallowed by a black that is not absence of effort but absence as the subject itself.

No paint. No print. No ink. What you see here is built the way the whole Void series is built, through depth set into the surface rather than added to it, through a controlled absence. The image is always present; light and angle only deepen it.

There is something of orbit in this form, something of breath, something of a thought that keeps circling the same point without ever quite closing. A sphere is the oldest shape there is for wholeness, and here wholeness is granted only in part, the rest left to the viewer's imagination and to the dark.

From across a room the work is monumental and silent, a planet caught mid turn. Brought close, it dissolves into a field of depth, mark beside mark, each one a small withholding that adds up to presence.

This piece continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Half of the sphere is enough to remember the whole."
