A Sphere Bristling With Light

Seen this close, a single grain of pollen becomes a world of its own. What the eye would normally lose in a breath of wind now fills the frame entirely, a pale sphere bristling with hundreds of fine spikes, suspended in absolute black.

There is nothing added to make it appear this way. The image is not painted, not printed, not drawn in ink. It is built from depth, from a careful presence and absence beneath the surface, so that light itself has to do the work of revealing the form.

From across a room the piece reads as a single quiet shape, almost a held breath. Step closer and that stillness opens into a field of texture and shadow, spike after spike catching the light from a slightly different angle, as if the sphere were breathing.

Pollen is one of nature's smallest travelers, armored and impossibly light at once, built to survive a journey it cannot see the end of. Magnified past all proportion, it becomes something closer to a portrait, fragile life wearing its defenses in plain sight.

The work continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print.

A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence. This work is unique.
