Night holds the bridge the way memory holds a single clear image, not whole, but enough to carry the feeling of the thing. Two towers rise out of the dark, their lines gathered from a field of individual marks that catch what light there is and let the rest fall away.
From across the room the structure stands monumental and still, a span cast over empty space, its full weight only suggested. Come closer and the steel opens into a field of depth, mark after mark tracing the curve of a cable, the edge of a tower, the long low line of a deck reaching toward the dark.
Nothing here was added. No paint. No print. No ink. The bridge appears through what has been taken away, through controlled absence in the surface that the eye completes on its own, much as a traveler completes a crossing before reaching the far side.
There is a quiet meaning in choosing a bridge for this kind of image, a structure raised to join two shores now standing as a structure built from connection itself, point answering point across the dark, cable by cable, until the span holds together on faith as much as on form.
The image is always present. Light and angle only deepen its contrast, so the bridge reads a little differently from each side of the room, the way it once stood between one night and the next.
This work continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
"A bridge of points, crossing the dark on light alone."
