A small house hangs in the dark, lifted off the ground by nothing more than a single balloon and a thin line of string. The ground itself is a long bright field, a beam of light cutting diagonally across the black, and on that field the house leaves behind the one proof that it was ever there: a shadow, dark and empty, lying exactly where it used to stand.

No paint. No print. No ink. The balloon, the house, the long field of light beneath it, all of it is formed from a field of individual marks worked directly into the surface of the acrylic glass. The image is not applied onto the surface, it is taken from it, built by controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

The image is always present, in daylight or dim room alike. Light does not create it, light sharpens it. Under a direct source the scratches catch and hold the glow, the contrast deepens, the house and its balloon seem to lift further from the black behind them. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

From across a room the work settles into something quiet and whole, a house caught mid departure, weightless, almost tender. Step closer and that calm dissolves into the field of fine scratches that built it, countless individual marks.

The subject carries its own small ache. A house is the most fixed idea we have, four walls, a chimney, a door that stays shut against the night. Here it is untethered, carried off by something as fragile as a balloon, its shadow left behind like a memory of staying put. It asks a quiet question about what we hold onto and what eventually lifts away from us anyway.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some things only become visible once they have already started to leave."
