A Skin Not Yet His Own

A face surfaces from black, half of it lit like marble touched by first light, the other half already claiming him back into shadow. The cracks running through the stone cheek are not damage. They are the seams where becoming shows through, the moment before a form decides what it will be.

Nothing here was painted, printed or inked onto the surface. The likeness exists only where depth allows it to exist, carved from absence rather than added to it. Where the surface withholds, the face withholds too, and the two darknesses, his and the void's, become impossible to separate.

"A Skin Not Yet His Own" holds a face caught between sculpture and self, as if the marble has not finished deciding whether to let him go. One side is finished, classical, cool under strong light. The other is still unclaimed, waiting in the dark for a form of its own.

From across a room the work reads as a single monumental head, still and commanding. Move closer, and the stillness resolves into a field of fine depth, the cracks becoming a private topography that only reveals itself to a patient eye.

The piece changes with the room it hangs in. Morning light draws the jaw and the crease above the brow forward, evening light lets them recede, so the face is never seen the same way twice. It continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsson, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print.

A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
