A Silver Field of Scars looks straight down onto the surface of the moon, close enough that the horizon disappears and the whole frame becomes craters overlapping craters, rim against rim, one field of old impact without end.

Nothing in this image was added. Every bright edge marks a place where the surface was taken away, and every pale floor simply catches what light there is, so the picture exists through what has been removed, never through what has been placed on top.

Seen from across a room, the piece is monumental and silent, a single pale disc suspended in dark. Move closer and it becomes a quiet field of depth, crater within crater, shifting with the contrast and light of the room and with the angle from which it is seen, present in one moment and settling back into shadow in the next.

A field of craters like this is also a record. Each mark is the memory of a collision that was never repaired, only absorbed into the surface as part of what it became, so what first reads as damage settles, on closer looking, into something closer to history.

A Silver Field of Scars continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. This work is unique.

"A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence."
