A Ring Scratched From Void takes the last instant before totality and holds it still. The sun itself is gone, swallowed by the black disc at the centre, and what remains is only its edge, a corona thrown into the dark like a crown with nothing left to crown.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is not placed onto the acrylic glass, it is taken from it. A field of individual marks opens across the surface exactly where the corona would blaze, catching and scattering light, while the disc at the centre is left closed, dark, entirely untouched.

An eclipse has always carried more than astronomy. It is the moment the source of all seeing is blotted out, and the world keeps its shape only through the light bent around that blackness. Scratched into acrylic glass, that idea becomes physical, the image existing because something was taken away rather than added, the void made visible by the damage that surrounds it.

The ring is always present, in daylight or dim room alike. Direct light draws the corona forward and the contrast deepens along the surface, but the image never switches on or off with the light. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it.

From across a room the work settles into one monumental gesture, a black circle wearing a crown of light against endless dark. Up close that crown breaks apart into a field of fine scratches, each one holding its own sliver of brightness, restless where the whole reads as still.

A Ring Scratched From Void continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"What is missing becomes the light."
