A single apple hangs alone in A Rim Ignites the Red, caught in a deep red field with nothing else to hold the eye. One side of the fruit has been given back to the light, a thin curved rim and one long bright highlight tracing the shoulder of its skin, while the rest of the apple stays folded into the red, present but withheld (paragraph 5: 'that same red field the apple is suspended in'). The short stem and its one veined leaf catch the same single source, the leaf almost fully alight, a small bright counterweight to the fruit's quiet bulk.

Nothing here was added. The image is built by removal, a field of fine scratches shaped directly into the surface of the deep red coloured mirror glass, so the bright rim and the leaf's veins are scratched into the surface rather than placed on top of it. Red is not just the ground the apple floats in, it is the colour of the fruit's own nature, ripeness and appetite and a certain quiet danger held in one still, suspended shape.

The scratches are always there, with or without a spotlight on them. What changes is only how much the room gives back. Light does not create this image, it sharpens it, so under a direct beam the rim deepens and the leaf seems to lift off the surface, and in softer light the apple settles back into its own stillness without ever disappearing.

Stand back and the apple reads as one dramatic, almost monumental gesture against the red. Move closer and that clean edge resolves into a field of individual marks, each one small and exact, together building a highlight that no single stroke could hold on its own.

Because the ground is coloured mirror glass, the wall and the room behind you drift into the red around the fruit, and your own reflection settles into that same dark field the apple is suspended in. You are not just looking at the apple, you are quietly placed inside the space it hangs in.

This work continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work, a visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, and where the mirror turns looking into taking part.

"One rim of light, and a whole fruit learns to glow."
