In this piece, a face rests in profile, caught in the narrow space between waking and sleep. Half of it disappears into pure black, the other half is drawn out by a quiet fall of light across brow, closed eye and lips. Nothing here is added. The likeness is not painted onto the surface but carved from depth and controlled absence, so that presence and disappearance share the same plane.

From across a room the work reads as near total darkness, a monumental hush with only the faintest suggestion of a human form. Step closer and the darkness resolves into a field of subtle depth, where light catches the curve of a cheekbone or the soft line of a closed eyelid and then lets it go again. The image is never fixed. It shifts with the light in the room, with the hour of the day, with where the viewer chooses to stand.

Sleep is the subject, but so is concealment. Half a face given to us, half withheld in shadow, as though even in rest a person keeps something back. It speaks to how little of anyone is ever fully visible, how identity itself lives at the edge of what light allows us to see.

This work continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. Each piece in acrylic glass asks the viewer to slow down, to let their eyes adjust, to find the image the way one finds a face in a darkened room.

This work is unique.

'A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.'
