A Palm Opens to Dark

Out of raw stone a hand rises, fingers spread as wide as they will go, the wrist still held fast in the rock below. It is not climbing free. It is opening, as if the gesture itself were the point of arrival.

There is something both tender and immense in that open palm. It could be a greeting, a surrender, or a question asked of the dark that surrounds it. The hand does not reach for anything in particular. It simply opens, and in opening, becomes present.

The image is not painted or printed onto the surface. It is built from depth, from what has been taken away rather than added, so the hand seems to have always been inside the material, waiting for light to find it.

From across a room the work reads as one quiet gesture, pale and still against the dark. Step closer and that stillness opens into a field of depth, a texture only light can draw out. The hand shifts with the hour, with the angle of a lamp, with where the viewer chooses to stand.

There is a symbolic weight to a hand caught between rock and air. It suggests a self not yet finished, something that has broken the surface but has not let go of where it came from. Held between the two, the palm stays open.
