A room can hold a crowd and still sound like silence, and A Jar Holds His Shout is built on exactly that contradiction. Every figure here stands inside a glass jar of his own making, head thrown back, mouth open mid cry, and not one of them is close enough to be heard by any of the others.

What the acrylic glass gives back of those jars is pure containment caught as light. Each curved wall, each rounded dome, each dark little pedestal beneath a pair of feet, is formed from a field of fine scratches that gathers the room's single source of light and throws it back as a cool, continuous glow, so the glass reads as more present than the person sealed inside it. The image sits in the surface itself, always there, and light only deepens what was already scratched into it.

The man at the centre keeps almost none of that light. His raised head, his open mouth, the tense line of his back, all of it stays close to black, a shape cut out of the glow surrounding him rather than drawn inside it. His shout becomes something you have to read in posture alone, since the one thing the piece refuses to give him is a face built out of light.

Across the floor, that same restraint repeats. The long shadows thrown by jar after jar are held in the same pale marks as the glass itself, until floor and container start to blur into a single, aching field of noise with nowhere left to go, the closest thing this piece has to sound.

Seen from a distance, the work reads as a congregation, rows of people standing shoulder to shoulder in something like a shared space. Come closer and that reading falls apart. Each jar is sealed, each voice is private, and the room that looked like togetherness turns out to be a field of exactly as many silences as there are people standing in it. It is not hard to recognise a version of that room, voices raised everywhere and arriving nowhere, noise mistaken for being heard.

A Jar Holds His Shout belongs to In Plain Sight, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of showing how a room full of raised voices can still leave every one of them unheard.

"Everyone is shouting. No one is listening."
