A Spanish galleon leans into a wall of black water, sails torn to ribbons, masts bent like reeds beneath a sky that has turned entirely to lightning. This is the moment before the verdict, the instant a vessel built to carry empire across oceans is reminded that the ocean answers to no flag.

No paint. No print. No ink. The curling face of the wave, the shredded rigging, the white fracture of the lightning, all of it is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, an image built by controlled surface damage rather than by pigment.

Seen from across a room, the piece reads as one dramatic strike, a ship caught between a rising wall of water and a sky split open by light. Come closer and that single image resolves into a dense field of controlled scratches, each line placed with intent, monumental from afar and intimate up close.

The image is always present, in daylight as in shadow. Light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under a directed source the wave gains weight, the rigging tightens into focus, and the lightning seems to hold its charge a moment longer. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the ship.

There is a quieter layer beneath the drama. A galleon once carried gold, ambition, and the certainty of its own importance across the Atlantic, and none of that means anything to a storm. What survives here is not the cargo but the will of a hull to hold its shape through one more wave, one more strike of light.

A Hull Bows to the Storm continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"The sea does not ask what a ship believes about itself."
