A Hat Spirals Into Night

A man stares out from an absolute black, his eyes wide and fixed, as if caught mid breath. Above him, his top hat does not stay a hat. It unwinds, ring by ring, into a slow spiral that climbs and vanishes into the dark, as though gravity had simply let go of it.

There is a stillness to his face that makes the spiral above him feel even stranger, calm below, chaos above. He is dressed for composure, the crisp collar, the neat bow tie, yet the one object that should announce his status is coming undone in the air, spinning away from him like a thought he cannot hold onto.

It is a portrait about the gap between how we present ourselves and what is actually happening inside us. The face holds its expression. The hat does not. Something is unraveling, quietly, upward, out of reach.

No paint. No print. No ink. The face and the spiraling hat are scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built from controlled scratches rather than pigment. The image is always present, visible without any special light. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast where the spiral catches the light and letting the darkness around it fall away completely.

From across a room the piece reads as a single monumental gesture, a man dissolving into his own uncertainty. Close up, that same gesture breaks into a dense field of controlled surface damage, each line part of a larger structure that only resolves at distance. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the man at its center.
