A single sheet of black stillness, until absence begins to fold itself into wings. Wingtip meets beak, beak meets wingtip, and the field closes without a single gap. There is no ground here, no horizon, no direction the eye can call north. Only birds, endless and identical in kind, becoming one continuous surface.

Nothing was drawn onto this work and nothing was printed. No paint, no ink, no line laid on top of another. What you see is depth carved into the surface itself, absence shaped so precisely that it reads as a bird, then as a hundred birds, then as one unbroken flock.

From across the room the piece is quiet, almost severe, a monumental black field that gives little away. Step closer and it opens. Light catches the edges of each void, contrast pulls feather from shadow, and the flock rises out of stillness. Move again and it settles back into silence. The image belongs to the light in the room as much as to the surface itself.

A flock has no edges of its own. Where one bird ends another begins, wing folding into wing until the idea of a single body dissolves into the pattern. It is a quiet meditation on belonging, on how a shape only becomes visible through everything pressed close around it, on the seams we assume must be there and are not.

A Flock Without Seams continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. This work is unique.

A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Even flight, seen closely enough, has no seams left to find."
