A Face Undone by Wax

A face held still, eyes closed, dissolving into black. Across the forehead and down the cheeks, pale lines run like wax caught mid melt, sealing the features under a slow, hardened rain.

Nothing here was added to make this image. It exists only where light is allowed to enter and where darkness is allowed to remain, depth and absence as the only vocabulary, no paint, no print, no ink, only a surface shaped until it holds a likeness.

The wax reads as a kind of surrender. Closed eyes, a stilled mouth, a face given over to something that covers rather than adorns. It speaks to what people let harden over themselves over time, composure, restraint, the quiet masks worn until they feel like skin. Undone here, and in the undoing, seen more plainly than before.

From across a room the work settles into a single dark, luminous mass, a face barely holding its shape against the black. Move closer and it opens into a field of depth, each falling line its own small event of light and shadow.

The image is not fixed. It shifts with the hour, with the angle of a lamp, with where a person chooses to stand. It appears, it recedes, it asks to be returned to more than once.

This work continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
