She stands caught in a single fall of light, her dress already giving way at the hem. Where the fabric should end, it keeps unraveling instead, and what was cloth becomes a flock of birds carrying the last of the gown into the dark.

The image is held entirely as a field of fine scratches across acrylic glass, shaped out of an almost featureless black. No paint. No print. No ink. The floor beneath her glows as a field of individual marks, while the birds remain dark silhouettes cut from that light, caught mid departure.

The image is always present, scratched into the surface rather than applied onto it. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, so that from a changed angle the contrast deepens and the flock seems to gather more speed as it lifts away.

There is a quiet symbolism here, of a woman shedding the shape she was given, of identity loosening at the edges until it lifts and becomes something closer to flight. The dress does not simply fall away. It turns into whatever is leaving.

A Dress Unravels Into Wings continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"She does not vanish. She becomes the birds that carry her away."
