A Diamond Field of Silence

A Diamond Field of Silence begins with a single gesture, a face turned into profile, a masked figure caught between concealment and presence. The Harlequin looks away from us, and in that turning away the whole tension of the work settles into place.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than pigment, so that what glows here is not colour but removal itself.

Across the shoulder, the diamond pattern of the Harlequin's costume becomes a field of fine scratches, catching and holding the light until it reads almost like woven cloth. The face stays quieter, held back in a dark silhouette beneath the mask, as if the sitter has agreed to be seen only partway.

That balance carries the symbolism of the Harlequin itself, a figure whose identity has always lived behind a painted face, performing certainty while concealing what lies underneath. Here the costume speaks louder than the features, and the viewer is left studying pattern where an expression might otherwise be.

The image is always present, with or without direct light. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast in the diamonds and letting the profile settle further into shadow, so the work reads differently depending on where you stand, without ever losing itself.

This piece continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which a figure like the Harlequin becomes a study in how much of a person can be withheld and still be recognised. This work is unique.
