A Cube Wound in Pearls

A Cube Wound in Pearls holds a simple form inside an ornament of light. Seen from one corner, two faces open at once, each carrying rows of pale shapes that read as pearls strung tightly over an edge, tightening into slits where the surface turns away from view.

Pearls are made to adorn, to soften what they cover, to sit close to the body they wrap. Here they wrap a form that offers no softness at all, a plain geometric volume, and the tension between the two, ornament and structure, gentleness and edge, becomes the quiet subject of the piece.

Nothing has been added to make this image. Each pearl exists as a controlled absence in the surface, a shape drawn from depth rather than placed upon it. No paint. No print. No ink.

The image appears and fades as light moves across it, as the viewer's eye and position shift. The rounded forms on the near face foreshorten into narrow slivers along the two faces that recede, so the cube's volume is built entirely through that change in perspective, never through drawing or shading.

From across a room the piece reads as one still, geometric object, almost sculptural in its restraint. Closer, that stillness opens into a field of depth, dozens of individual voids, each holding and releasing the light differently as you move.
