A bulb this size was never meant to fit in a room this small. It rises from floor to ceiling, its glass curve pressing almost against the walls, filling the space with a soft, steady glow. Beside it, barely noticed at first, a small door stands ajar, a sliver of light slipping through its own gap into the dark.
No paint. No print. No ink. The bulb and the door are formed through controlled scratches, a field of individual marks drawn into the surface of the acrylic glass. Up close the image dissolves into that field of fine scratches, countless small gestures with no single mark carrying the picture alone. Step back, and the same marks gather into something monumental, an object too large for its own room.
The idea is simple and a little absurd, and that is exactly the point. Something meant to illuminate a space has outgrown it entirely, leaving almost no room to stand, think or breathe beside it. The door, so much smaller, so easily overlooked, offers the only way out, or perhaps the only way in.
The image is always present, in daylight as in dusk. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast where the scratches catch and reflect. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image, so the room keeps shifting even as the bulb stays fixed and overwhelming at its centre.
A Bulb Too Big for the Room continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.
A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
"Some rooms were never built for the light they were asked to hold."
