A Body Built as Cathedral

A Body Built as Cathedral opens the human form the way a nave opens itself to light. Muscle is drawn back like drapery pulled from a chapel wall, and what stands beneath is not flesh but structure, ribs rising in vaulted arches, a spine that turns through the body like a staircase built to carry a soul upward rather than a man.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is not applied onto the surface, it is scratched into it, a field of controlled scratches worked into acrylic glass until anatomy reads as architecture.

The image is always present, visible whether the room is dim or lit directly upon it. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast until the ribs read like stonework and the spinal stair seems to turn a little further into the dark.

Renaissance anatomy once looked at the body the way builders looked at cathedrals, as proof that something this complex, this load bearing, could only have been designed. Here that reverence returns. The opened chest reads as a rib vault, the spine as a spiral stair leading somewhere unseen, and the whole figure stands like a structure still being consecrated.

From across a room the figure holds like a monument, calm and upright in the dark. Move closer and the monument dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one a small, deliberate act of removal, none of them alone the image, all of them together the body.

A Body Built as Cathedral continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, a visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
