Carved by Longing is a contemporary artwork about stillness, desire and the body held in suspension.

The figure stands inside a field of absolute darkness. No movement. No noise. Only the upward tilt of a head, the closed eyes, the chest catching a thread of light from the side. The posture is not defeat. It is waiting. The kind of waiting that has weight, that has shaped the body over time into something resilient and aching at once.

The image does not emerge through paint or print. No pigment. No ink. It appears through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Each scratch catches the light differently. As the viewer moves, the figure shifts between clarity and softness, and its contrast quietly deepens.

From a distance, the work reads as a monumental figure carved from darkness. Up close, the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, each one a trace of removal rather than addition. The darkness is not filled in. It is what remains when everything else is taken away.

Longing is not always loud. Sometimes it is a body standing perfectly still, holding something it cannot name. This work holds that moment. The silence before a feeling breaks the surface.

Carved by Longing continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"What the light reveals, the darkness holds."
