Glass Cradle of Time

Glass Cradle of Time shows a monumental hourglass suspended in complete darkness, its form so precise it feels less made than remembered. Instead of sand, a miniature human figure drifts from the upper chamber toward the lower one, caught mid fall, mid life, mid everything that cannot be paused.

The hourglass has always been a quiet warning. Here it becomes something more personal. The falling figure turns an abstract measure of time into a body, a single life suspended between privilege and gravity, between the illusion of stillness and the certainty of descent.

Nothing in this image is added. The glass, the light, the falling form all exist because material has been taken away. Controlled scratches on acrylic glass carve the hourglass into being, and it is light, not pigment, that lets it surface. Turn away, and the image recedes into the dark. Return, and it reappears, always a little different, never fully still.

From a distance the piece reads as a single monumental object, weightless and exact. Move closer and that clarity dissolves into a field of fine, deliberate marks, proof that depth and detail were built from the same gesture.

Glass Cradle of Time continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
