Weightless Discipline

Weightless Discipline captures a single suspended instant. A dancer stands barefoot on the edge of a monumental black cube, her body drawn into a line that should not be possible to hold. Narrow light finds only certain contours, leaving the rest to disappear into darkness.

The figure does not appear through paint or ink. It is built through controlled scratches on acrylic glass, a removal rather than an addition. What looks drawn is, in fact, taken away.

As the light shifts, so does the image. Contours that were sharp a moment ago soften into absence, then return. The work moves between clarity and softness the way a body in motion moves between balance and fall.

From a distance, the piece reads as monumental, a single figure holding impossible stillness against a field of pure black. Step closer and that stillness resolves into a landscape of fine surface damage, each mark part of the tension that holds the pose together.

Balance, risk and discipline sit at the centre of this work. The cube offers no safety net, only edge. The dancer's control is the only thing keeping the composition from collapse, and that same control is what the scratched surface asks of the viewer's eye.

Weightless Discipline continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.
