Darth Vader is not just a figure of power. He is a figure of concealment. Behind the armor, behind the breath, behind the mask, something human remains, barely visible, dissolving into shadow.

In this work, Vader does not emerge from light. He recedes into darkness. The portrait exists at the edge of visibility, where the helmet catches a thread of illumination and the rest surrenders to black. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is constructed through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, marks that hold light only when the surface is ready to give it.

From a distance, it reads as a presence. Monumental, cinematic, still. Step closer, and the figure dissolves into a field of controlled scratches. What seemed like a face becomes a texture. What seemed like shadow becomes structure.

This duality is inseparable from the subject. Vader is a character defined by what cannot be seen. The face behind the helmet. The man inside the machine. The light buried inside the darkness. In this medium, that tension is made literal. The image appears and withdraws depending on where you stand, depending on how the light falls.

The atmospheric smoke and selective illumination of the composition carry over into the acrylic glass as something closer to a memory than a portrait. The surface holds the image the way darkness holds a silhouette, partially, conditionally, always slightly out of reach.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Even in darkness, presence has a shape."
