Almost Remembered

Almost Remembered is a contemporary artwork about memory, loss, and the fragile boundary between presence and disappearance.

The figure does not arrive. It surfaces. Slowly, incompletely, the way a memory reasserts itself in the quiet of the night or fades just before you name it. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is drawn from the acrylic glass itself, through controlled scratches that catch the light and release it as you move.

From a distance, the silhouette holds. It is monumental in its stillness, centred in deep shadow and generous silence. Step closer, and the figure dissolves into a field of controlled surface damage, a texture that feels geological, intimate, entirely its own. The image does not live in the glass. It lives in the light that passes through it.

That tension is the work. Presence and absence. Recognition and forgetting. The figure stands as if it has always been there, and as if it is already leaving.

Monochrome strips a subject to its emotional core. Without colour, only contour and shadow remain. The silhouette carries the weight of something familiar, something almost named. That almost is deliberate. Memory is rarely precise. It is approximate, felt more than seen.

Almost Remembered continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
