A figure stands against absolute darkness. The body is reduced to its most essential form, smooth and still, edged in a single line of white light. Where the face should be, there is only a circle of pure absence.
No paint. No print. No ink. The image does not sit on the surface. It emerges from within, built entirely from depth and the deliberate withdrawal of material. From across the room it is monumental and silent, a shape that commands the eye without explanation. Move closer, and the surface opens into a field of controlled depth, shifting with every change in light and angle.
We locate the self in the face. Features carry memory, emotion, recognition, all of it compressed into a few inches of human surface. Absence Holds removes that surface entirely. What remains is a body that still stands. Present. Upright. Faceless. The void does not unmake the figure. It defines it.
The work changes with the light. In soft, diffused conditions the silhouette barely surfaces from the wall. Under stronger light the edges sharpen and the circular absence deepens, becoming almost gravitational. The image appears and fades, never fixed, always dependent on the space and the hour.
There is something in this that reaches beyond image making. A body stripped of identity still holds its posture. Absence, it turns out, is not collapse. It is a kind of structure.
Absence Holds continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
"What we cannot name still shapes the way we stand."
