A Wing Against the Dark

In this work, a white swan arches its body over a sleeping woman, one vast wing lifted like a shield against the surrounding black. The gesture reads as both protection and warning, tenderness held one breath from menace, caught under a single hard light falling from above, with faint grain and drifting dust suspended in that light. It is this ambiguity that gives the piece its quiet theatre.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than anything added on top. Where another artist would lay down pigment, this work is formed by taking away, mark by mark, until a wing, a sleeping face and a field of pure black emerge from what was once a plain sheet.

The image is always present, in daylight as much as in a darkened room. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. As the light shifts, the wing and the sleeping figure move between clarity and quiet, the contrast deepening under a direct source and settling again as it fades. It reads differently from every angle, without ever losing the image underneath.

Seen from across a room, the composition holds together as one dramatic, almost old-master painting, all deep black and sculpted white. Step closer and that same image opens into a field of controlled scratches, resolving into the whole again only once you step back. It is a work built for both distances, monumental and intimate at once.

The swan carries its own long history as a symbol of grace, fidelity and fierce, silent protection, and here that history is turned toward something more vulnerable, a woman asleep, unaware of the guard being kept over her, or of the dark pressing in from every side. The wing becomes a boundary between rest and threat, drawn not in ink but in the surface itself.
