Veiled in Silver Hush shows a mature woman reclining beneath a veil so thin it seems woven from light itself. Her form softens under the fabric, caught in a single hard beam falling from above, the rest of the frame given over to a deep, pure black. Fine grain and floating dust catch that same light, small witnesses to a moment held perfectly still.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built by removing rather than adding, a portrait drawn in controlled scratches instead of pigment. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

The image is always present, in daylight, in shade, from any angle. Light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under a directed light the scratches catch and the contrast deepens, the veil seems to lift a little further; in softer light the same figure settles back into hush. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

The veil is the real subject. It conceals and reveals in the same gesture, the way a certain kind of dignity often does, choosing what to show and what to keep private. There is nothing hurried about this woman's rest. She is not hiding. She is simply not fully given away.

Seen from across a room the work reads as a single monumental figure, theatrical and painterly, close to the hush of an old master's canvas. Step closer and that figure dissolves into a field of controlled scratches, marks that only resolve into a body, a veil, a held breath, once you step back again.

Veiled in Silver Hush continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

"The veil hides nothing. It only asks you to look a little longer."
