In this work, two silhouettes hold the darkness between them. A man in an immaculate evening coat and a black stallion of enormous, quiet power stand side by side, caught in a narrow line of light that refuses to give up more than it must. Nothing here is decoration. Everything is restraint.
The image does not arrive through paint or ink. It arrives through removal. Every scratch has been placed into the acrylic glass with the same discipline the subject himself seems to embody, and it is that controlled surface damage, not pigment, that lets the man and the horse step forward out of the black.
As the light shifts across the surface, the two figures move between clarity and absence. One moment the rim of light traces the curve of a shoulder and the arch of a neck, the next it dissolves back into the void, as if the scene itself is deciding whether to be seen.
From a distance, the piece reads as a single monumental image, a man and his horse suspended in stillness. Step closer and that image breaks apart into a field of fine, deliberate scratches, a surface that only resolves into meaning again once you step back.
Beyond the figures themselves lies a quieter subject, one of lineage, loyalty and power held in check rather than displayed. The bond between rider and animal becomes a portrait of self mastery, the kind that does not need to raise its voice to be felt.
Twin Sovereigns of Night continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.
"Two sovereigns, one silence, and a light that decides how much of the night to give back."
