Testimony Never Given

The chair is there. The person is not.

Testimony Never Given is a contemporary artwork about silence, absence and the weight of unspoken truth. The witness chair stands alone in darkness. A single beam of light falls on it. No one sits. No one speaks. And yet the air feels charged, as if something important almost happened here.

In this piece, the courtroom becomes a stage for what was never said. Justice, in its most human form, depends on testimony. On presence. On voice. Here, all three are missing. What remains is the chair, the light, and the shadow that gathers where a person should be.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Each scratch catches the light differently. As the viewer moves, the chair shifts between clarity and near disappearance, between evidence and erasure. The work breathes with the light around it.

From a distance, the image reads as a single powerful scene. A classical composition, monochrome and cinematic. Up close, the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, marks that together carry meaning, and separately carry nothing.

Testimony Never Given continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
