Two figures stand so close that the tall window behind them no longer separates one shape from another. In Silhouette of Us, a couple becomes a single dark form against a column of bright light, the edge of one body dissolving into the next until it is no longer clear where one lover ends and the other begins.
The light falls from above, hard and theatrical, the way it might fall across a stage or a painting from an old master's studio. Everything around the couple disappears into a pure black field, so the eye has nowhere else to rest. What remains is presence, weight, and the quiet architecture of two people choosing to stand as one.
No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled scratches rather than anything added to it. It is always present, in any room, in any light. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast until the silhouette seems to lift itself off the wall.
From across a room, Silhouette of Us reads as one monumental shape, a couple caught in a single held breath. Move closer and that shape opens into a fine field of controlled surface damage, grain and shimmer where a smooth black plane seemed to be. It reads differently from every angle, without ever losing the image, a visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
Love, at its most complete, erases the outline between two people. This piece holds that instant permanently, the moment before two silhouettes become one, built not through likeness but through everything taken away rather than added.
Silhouette of Us continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. It belongs in a space that asks to be looked at twice, once from a distance, once up close.
