where-rim-light-meets-shadow
Where Rim Light Meets Shadow

The curve begins at the ribs and sweeps on to the hip, one long plane of light pulled taut across the surface against the black. Everything that is not that curve has been let go. There is no face, no setting, no detail to soften the shape into a particular woman on a particular day. What remains is the gesture itself, the quiet architecture of a body at rest.

That line exists here as a field of individual marks, close and overlapping where the hip turns toward light, sparse and broken where the waist folds into shadow. Up close the surface is nothing but texture, a weather of fine scratches with no clear direction. Step back and the marks resolve into the body in an instant, the rim of light tracing the ribs down to the swell of the hip like a single breath held and released.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than pigment, the picture formed by what has been taken away rather than what has been added. The image is always present, visible in any light. Direct light does not create it, it sharpens it, deepens the contrast and lets the scratches catch and hold a shine the eye keeps returning to. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

There is something unguarded in choosing to show only this, a hip, a waist, a single thread of light, and trusting it to carry the whole presence of a person. The body is not posed for recognition here. It is offered as form, as weight, as warmth caught mid motion, closer to memory than to portrait.

Where Rim Light Meets Shadow continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Where_Rim_Light_Meets_Shadow_thumbnail.jpg?v=1792313512
