twin-hills-of-silence
Twin Hills of Silence

Twin Hills of Silence begins with a body at rest. A mature woman lies on her side, her hip and her shoulder rising like two hills, divided by a fold of shadow that falls between them like a valley. A single hard light falls from above, the way it falls in the paintings of the old masters, carving form out of darkness rather than describing it.

There is no paint here, no print, no ink. The image sits in the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled scratches rather than applied onto it. Where the woman's skin catches light, the surface has been worked until it holds brightness. Where the shadow falls, the black glass stays untouched, deep and absolute.

The image is always present, visible long before any lamp is turned toward it. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast between the two hills and the shadow that divides them, so the piece reads differently as the eye moves, or as the room around it changes.

There is something quietly monumental about a body reduced to landscape. A hip becomes a hill. A shoulder becomes a hill. The space between them, dark and unclaimed, becomes the only real event in the frame. It is a portrait that withholds a face, asking the viewer to find the woman in geography rather than likeness, in the terrain of a life rather than its expression.

Seen from across a room, the figure settles into two soft masses of light against a field of pure black, calm and sculptural. Move closer, and that calm resolves into a dense field of controlled surface damage, each mark a small removal that, together, hold a body still.

Twin Hills of Silence continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some bodies speak loudest when they finally go still."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
