time-hung-out-to-dry
Time Hung Out to Dry

Time Hung Out to Dry is a tribute to The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and it answers that painting at a quieter hour. Where the original melts its watches across a sunlit shore, this one hangs them out like washing, strung on a line between two bare trees in an empty desert at night. One watch drips slowly toward the cracked earth. Ants gather on another, patient and indifferent to the hour. Distant cliffs stand under an unseen moon, and the whole scene seems to hold its breath.

This is Tijs Dragtsma's own composition, built in homage rather than imitation. It is an independent and unique work, not a copy, a reproduction, a print or an edition of Dalí's painting, and it carries no authorisation, endorsement or license from the artist's estate or foundation. What stands here is a new conversation with an old idea, seen from this side of the night.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is formed by controlled scratches worked into the surface of acrylic glass, a field of individual marks that gathers into watches, trees, ants and shadow. From across the room the scene reads as one monumental, moonlit tableau. Close in, it opens into the controlled surface damage that built it, mark by mark, a field of fine scratches holding the whole night in place.

The image is always there, with or without direct light. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, the way a struck match sharpens a room already furnished in the dark. Under a raking light the contrast deepens, the watches gain weight, the drip toward the ground reads almost wet. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image underneath.

There is a quiet logic in choosing this subject for this material. Dalí melted his watches to picture time losing its grip. Here, time is not softened but worn away, scratched down the way wind and years wear down stone, the way cracked desert ground remembers a season of rain long after the water is gone. The ants keep working regardless. The trees keep standing bare. What erodes a surface and what erodes an hour turn out to be close cousins.

Time Hung Out to Dry belongs to In Tribute, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of letting time keep melting, now in light and shadow instead of paint. This work is unique. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Nothing hangs forever, not even time itself."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
