thunder-cut-from-dust
Thunder Cut From Dust

There is a moment before impact when an animal becomes pure intention, when weight and will move faster than thought. Thunder Cut From Dust holds that moment. A rhinoceros comes forward out of the dark, and around it the dust it has thrown into the air becomes the only light in the scene.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than colour. The animal itself stays almost entirely dark, a dense silhouette that the eye has to complete, while the storm it has kicked up is carried in a field of fine scratches that catch and hold the light.

That choice is the heart of the piece. The rhinoceros is given as mass and motion rather than detail, a shape the viewer recognises by its outline and its force rather than by what it shows. The dust, not the animal, is where the light lives, as if the violence of the charge has to burn itself into brightness before the creature can be seen at all.

From across a room the work reads as a single charging form breaking out of darkness, monumental and immediate. Close up it dissolves into a field of individual marks, a surface that only resolves back into the animal once distance is restored. Both readings are true at once, and the work holds them together.

The image is always present, with or without direct light on it. Light does not create the image, it sharpens it. Under a stronger angle the dust deepens in contrast and the charging shape gains weight, and the work reads differently as you move around it, without ever losing what it shows.

Thunder Cut From Dust continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"Some force cannot be painted, only cut free of the dark that hides it."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
