the-tears-of-pierrot
The Tears of Pierrot

Pierrot has always been the clown who is allowed to tell the truth. Behind the white paint and the painted smile lives the one figure in the theatre permitted to weep in public, and in The Tears of Pierrot that permission becomes the entire portrait. The head tips back, the eyes soften, and a single dark tear traces its slow path down a face built from a field of fine scratches rather than paint.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, so the face and the great ruffled collar exist as light itself, gathered mark by mark until a portrait forms out of removal rather than addition.

Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. In a quiet room the face already holds its sorrow, pale and legible against the dark. Under a shifting light the contrast deepens, the collar catches and glows, and the melancholy in the eyes becomes harder to look away from.

From across the room the work reads as one monumental face, tilted back in private grief. Close up, that same face dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one too small to carry meaning alone, together holding an expression no single line could hold.

Pierrot is a mask everyone recognises and no one quite trusts, the performer assumed to feel nothing because he is paid to make others feel everything. This piece keeps that tension intact, a face built entirely of controlled surface damage, describing an emotion that photography would only flatten into costume.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Even the saddest clown is made of light."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
