the-one-lit-astray
The One Lit Astray

In The One Lit Astray, one pale sheep stands inside a gathering of darker shapes, caught in a fall of moonlight that seems to settle on nothing but itself. The surrounding flock barely holds its shape, a few traces of line tracing ears and backs out of the dark, while the one at the center is built from a field of fine scratches that catch and hold the light. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, so the pale figure is always present, with or without a lamp aimed at it.

From a distance the work reads as a single luminous animal inside a quiet, almost held darkness, the kind of scene that could belong to a parable someone half remembers. Step closer and that glow resolves into a field of individual marks, each one a small act of removal rather than addition, the surface giving up its shine to describe fur, a turned head, and the weight of a body standing its ground.

The composition carries something of Magritte, where the ordinary becomes strange simply by being singled out. A flock is, by nature, a shape made of sameness. Here that sameness is interrupted by one body that will not disappear into it, not through rebellion but through the plain fact of being seen. The sheep around it are not erased, they remain as the dark that gives the one at the center its shape.

Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. Under a direct source, the scratches across the lit figure catch and reflect, and the contrast deepens, so it seems to lift slightly off the surface while the flock around it settles further into black. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the sheep at its center, or the quiet tension that holds the whole scene together.

The One Lit Astray continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure. This work is unique.

"One is lit, the rest are the dark that proves it."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
