The Great Wave in Scratch holds that moment still, the crest curled like a raised hand, a small boat and a distant peak reduced to almost nothing beneath it. Everything in the composition serves that single measure of scale, the immense against the barely there.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNo paint. No print. No ink. The wave exists because the surface of the acrylic glass has been taken away in a field of individual marks, not laid down but removed. Where the foam curls and claws at the air, the marks gather densely and the material itself begins to glow. Where the water runs deep and undisturbed, the acrylic glass is left alone, and the darkness there is not empty, it is simply water that has not yet caught the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSeen from across a room, the wave reads as one gesture, a single sweep of white breaking over black. Move closer and that gesture dissolves into a field of fine scratches, each one small, each one necessary, none of them alone able to describe the sea. It is only together, at a distance, that they become water again.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe image is always present. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under a direct source the crest gathers more brightness and the contrast between wave and depth deepens, the spray seeming almost to lift off the surface. Under softer light the same wave settles, quieter, but never gone. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBeneath the drama of the water there is a smaller, older story, the one every wave tells. A vessel this size against a force this size is a study in how little control we actually hold, and how often we keep sailing anyway. The mountain in the distance does not move. The wave does.
